Microfacies and Depositional Conditions of Jurassic to Eocene Carbonates: Implication on Ionian Basin Evolution

نویسندگان

چکیده

In order to decipher the paleo-depositional environments, during Late Jurassic Early Eocene syn-rift stage, at margins of Ionian basin, two different areas with exposed long sequences have been selected, Kastos Island (external margin) and Araxos peninsula (internal margin), were examined by means microfacies analysis biostratigraphy. On Island, based on lithological sedimentological features, following depositional environments recognized: an open marine/restricted environment prevailed (“Pantokrator” limestones), changing upwards into deep-sea slope Cretaceous (Vigla limestones). The Upper (Senonian limestones) is characterized a environment, whereas Paleogene, toe conditions prevailed. peninsula, Lower deposits (“Vigla” accumulated in environment; ones deposited or conditions. Paleocene limestones correspond environment. changes occurred Cretaceous, they Paleocene/Eocene, related stages tectonic activity basin from east west.

microfacies and depositional basin analysis of cretaceous deposite at korkouh area

in order to microfacies studies of the cretaceous deposits, a section called korkouh was selected in kerman province in central iran area. the korkouh is on the bidou formation with angular unconformity and underlain by paleogene conglomerates with an erosional surface. the studied section basically contains lime and dolomitic limestone with the thickness of 146 meters with new fossils such as ...

Long-term sediment accumulation in the Middle Jurassic–early Eocene Cordilleran retroarc foreland-basin system

The late Middle Jurassic–early Eocene (;120 m.y.) sediment-accumulation history of the Cordilleran foreland basin in northern Utah exhibits a sigmoidal pattern on a rate vs. time plot, with moderate rates of accumulation during late Middle Jurassic, very low net rates during Late Jurassic–earliest Cretaceous, increasingly rapid rates during Earlymiddle Cretaceous, and low rates during Late Cret...

Stratigraphy of the Upper Jurassic shallow marine carbonates of the Moghan area (NW Iran), with paleobiogeography implication on Alveosepta jaccardi (Schrodt, 1894)

A micropaleontological study has been carried out on the samples collected from the Sarv Abad section, the oldest and only known Jurassic sedimentary rocks cropping out in the Moghan area. Studied sequence consists of carbonates bounded at both base and top by clastic deposits. Studied carbonate deposits provide an assemblage of benthic foraminifera as well as calcareous algae. The stratigraphi...

Porosity evolution and diagenetic history of the upper Jurassic Mozduran Formation, eastern Kopet-Dagh Basin, NE Iran

The Upper Jurassic carbonates of the eastern part of the Kopet-Dagh Basin, with thickness of 470 m, are the major gas-bearing reservoir in NE Iran. The objectives of this study are recognition of diagenetic history and estimation of porosity related to dolomitization. Based on field and laboratory study, four carbonate facies associations have been identified at the Mazdavand outcrop. Most of t...
